CelineMacadam Handbag

Q: What is Céline’s Macadam canvas, and how does it differ from today’s Triomphe canvas?
A: Macadam is Céline’s historic monogram of interlocking Cs introduced in the 1970s. Modern collections refer to the motif as Triomphe canvas; the pattern scale and leather details may vary by era, but both reference the same heritage emblem inspired by the chains around Paris’s Arc de Triomphe.

Q: What typically fits in this medium Macadam handbag (approx. 26 × 20 × 10 cm)?
A: It comfortably holds a long wallet, smartphone, keys, sunglasses case, small cosmetics and an A5 diary or small tablet (up to around 10 inches). A slim 330 ml bottle fits horizontally; a 500 ml bottle is a tight fit. Capacity depends on how you pack—please refer to the Measurements above for exact sizing.

Q: Does this bag have a shoulder strap?
A: No. This style is designed for hand or crook‑of‑arm carry via its dual top handles (approx. 14 cm handle drop). There are no fittings for a detachable strap.

Q: How is the interior organised?
A: The bag has a black canvas lining with one internal zipped pocket for valuables. Externally, there are two slip pockets for quick‑access items such as cards, travel passes or receipts. It secures with a flap closure.

Q: Is Macadam canvas durable or water‑resistant?
A: Yes—Macadam/Triomphe canvas is a coated canvas, valued for being light, hard‑wearing and water‑resistant. However, it is not waterproof and the leather trim should be kept away from heavy rain. Wipe moisture off promptly and allow to air‑dry naturally.

Q: How should I care for this vintage piece?
A: For canvas, wipe with a soft damp cloth; for deeper cleans use a gentle, dedicated cleaner suitable for coated canvas. Condition the leather trim sparingly with a quality leather conditioner and avoid alcohol, harsh chemicals and abrasives. Store loosely stuffed in a breathable dust bag, out of direct sunlight and heat, to maintain shape and colour.

Q: How can I date and authenticate a vintage Céline Macadam bag?
A: Vintage Céline bags usually carry a date code on a small leather tab inside (often in or near a pocket). The code indicates when and where the bag was made and is not unique to a single item. Fonts and placements vary by era, so codes alone aren’t definitive—expert review is recommended. Every item at A Retro Tale is rigorously vetted by our specialists before listing.

Q: Where was this particular bag made?
A: Manufacturing locations vary by model and era. This specific piece is labelled Made in China. Production details can also be cross‑checked against the internal date code and stamps during authentication.

Q: What should I know about its vintage condition?
A: Overall very good: the exterior shows visible scuffing on the leather trim and corners; the interior shows light signs of use; and the silver‑tone hardware remains shiny with light surface scratches. No additional accessories are included unless stated under Accessories on this page.
