HermèsChaine d'Ancre Herbag Zip 31 Bag

Q: What are the dimensions of the Herbag Zip 31 and how does it compare to other Herbag sizes?
A: The Herbag Zip 31 measures approximately 31 × 25.5 × 10 cm, making it the compact everyday size. The Herbag line also includes larger options such as the Zip 39, which offers more height and length for work or travel. Please refer to the Measurements on this page for exact figures.

Q: What typically fits inside the Herbag Zip 31?
A: It comfortably holds daily essentials such as a long wallet, smartphone, keys, small cosmetics pouch, and a sunglasses case. It also accommodates a small tablet (around 11 inches). Most 13-inch laptops will not fit comfortably due to the height and tapered opening.

Q: Can I wear it crossbody?
A: The Herbag Zip 31 is designed to be carried by hand or worn over the shoulder. With an approximate strap drop of 46 cm on this item, it usually sits as a shoulder bag; crossbody wear may be short on most frames.

Q: Does it have an exterior pocket and an interior pouch?
A: Yes. The Zip version features a practical zipped pocket on the back and an unlined interior with a detachable pouch for small essentials.

Q: Can the canvas body be swapped for another one?
A: Yes, one of the Herbag’s signature features is its interchangeable canvas body. You can swap the body for another of the same size. The process involves removing the metal rod beneath the flap and reassembling; if you’re new to it, many owners prefer assistance from a professional or a Hermès boutique.

Q: What does Chaîne d’Ancre mean in this context?
A: Chaîne d’Ancre, French for anchor chain, is an iconic Hermès motif created in 1938. On this piece it appears as a graphic print on the canvas, lending a nautical-inspired, timeless look.

Q: What materials is this model made from?
A: The Herbag pairs robust cotton canvas with Vache Hunter leather for the flap, handle, and strap. This combination keeps the bag lightweight yet structured, with gold-tone hardware on this example.

Q: How should I care for the canvas and Vache Hunter leather?
A: Gently brush off dust, then wipe canvas with a slightly damp, soft cloth and allow to air dry away from heat and direct sunlight. For the leather trim, use a dry soft cloth only and avoid oils or household cleaners. Keep lighter canvases away from denim and dark textiles to minimise colour transfer. Store in its dust bag, lightly stuffed to maintain shape.

Q: Is the bag water-resistant?
A: The canvas offers light resistance to everyday use but is not fully waterproof. Avoid heavy rain and prolonged moisture; if the bag gets wet, blot gently and let it dry naturally. A protective cover can be used in wet weather for extra peace of mind.

Q: What does the Hermès date stamp U (2022) indicate on this item?
A: Hermès uses a discreet blind-stamp system to indicate the year of production. The letter U (without a surrounding shape) is widely understood to correspond to 2022 within the modern no-shape system. Note that stamps are one datapoint and not a standalone proof of authenticity.

Q: What is included with this item?
A: Everything that comes with the bag is listed in the product information. For this piece, that includes the box, dust bag, padlock, keys, clochette and the detachable pouch. If you would like us to reconfirm what is included, please contact us.

Q: How does A Retro Tale authenticate this bag?
A: Every item is thoroughly vetted by our in-house experts using multi-point checks of materials, stitching, hardware, stamps and date codes, as well as provenance review. We stand behind the authenticity of all items we sell and can share additional product information on request.
