Van Cleef & ArpelsVintage Alhambra Malachite Necklace

Q: Is this Van Cleef & Arpels Vintage Alhambra Malachite Necklace authentic?
A: Yes. Every item at A Retro Tale is rigorously vetted by our in‑house experts and sold with our authenticity commitment. Shop with confidence.

Q: What is it made from? Is it solid gold or plated?
A: It is crafted in solid 18‑carat (18k) yellow gold with a natural malachite Vintage Alhambra motif framed by the signature beaded border. Van Cleef & Arpels fine jewellery is not gold‑plated; pieces are typically hallmarked with VCA/“Van Cleef & Arpels”, “750/Au750” for 18k gold, and a unique serial number, often together with a country‑of‑origin stamp (this piece is noted as France).

Q: What are the measurements and how will it sit when worn?
A: The chain perimeter is approximately 42 cm, which usually sits around the collarbone on most wearers. The motif is about 1.5 cm (height) × 1.5 cm (width) × 0.4 cm (depth). If you’d like the precise drop length or a photo on model for scale, message us and we’ll provide it.

Q: How does it fasten? Is the clasp secure?
A: It features a lobster clasp closure, as shown in our images. Always ensure the clasp is fully closed before wear; a jeweller can add a short extender or safety jump ring if you prefer extra security.

Q: What hallmarks or stamps should I expect and where are they?
A: Authentic VCA pieces typically show: (1) the maker’s mark “VCA” or “Van Cleef & Arpels”, (2) a metal fineness mark “750/Au750”, and (3) a unique serial number. On Alhambra pendants these are often found on a small tag near the clasp and/or discreetly on the pendant or chain. Minor typography and placement variations can occur by era.

Q: Is malachite durable for everyday wear?
A: Malachite is a relatively soft and porous gemstone (about 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale). It can be worn regularly with care, but avoid knocks, abrasion and pressure. Natural banding/striations and slight colour variations are normal and part of its character.

Q: Can I wear it in the shower, swimming or to the gym? Can I sleep in it?
A: We recommend removing it before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping. Malachite is sensitive to moisture, heat, perspiration and chemicals; frequent water exposure can dull or etch the stone’s polish, and delicate chains are best kept free from tension during sleep.

Q: How should I clean and care for malachite and 18k yellow gold?
A: Keep it dry and apply perfume, sunscreen and lotions before putting the necklace on. After wear, gently wipe with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, chemical dips or abrasive polishes. If needed, lightly clean only the metal around the motif with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately; avoid soaking the stone. Store it separately in a pouch/box away from humidity and direct sunlight.

Q: Can the chain be adjusted or serviced?
A: A competent jeweller can add a small extender or replacement clasp to fine‑tune the drop, and can inspect or tighten the clasp over time. Servicing or stone work should be entrusted to experienced workshops familiar with malachite. Note that alterations may affect originality and resale value; contact us for recommendations.

Q: What condition should I expect, what is included, and can I return it?
A: This necklace is in Very Good Condition with light signs of careful wear possible unless otherwise noted. This listing includes no accessories unless specifically shown or stated. Returns are accepted in line with our policy—please see our Returns page for eligibility, timeframes and conditions, and return the item in the same condition received.
