ChanelCoco Mark Star Rhinestone Brooch

Q: Is this Chanel Coco Mark Star Rhinestone Brooch authentic?
A: Yes. Every item at A Retro Tale is rigorously vetted by our in‑house experts and sold with our authenticity commitment. Shop with confidence.

Q: What is it made from? Is it real gold or set with diamonds?
A: Chanel costume jewellery brooches are typically crafted from plated base metal (here in a gold‑tone finish) set with clear rhinestones/“strass.” They are not solid gold and the stones are not diamonds unless explicitly stated. This piece is described as gold‑tone metal with clear rhinestones from the Autumn 2017 collection, made in France.

Q: How big is it and how does it wear on a jacket or knit?
A: The brooch measures approximately 5.8 cm (height) x 5.5 cm (width) x 0.8 cm (depth). It has a statement presence that suits structured fabrics like wool coats, blazers, denim and heavier knits without feeling overly bulky. If you’d like the exact gram weight or a model photo for scale, just ask and we’ll provide it.

Q: How does it fasten and how can I make it more secure?
A: It features a traditional pin fastening at the back. For extra security, you can add a locking pin clutch/stopper and place a small felt or leather backing disc on the inside of the garment to stabilise the pin and protect fabric. Magnetic brooch converters are also an option when you wish to avoid piercing delicate fabrics.

Q: Can I wear it on delicate fabrics or on a handbag/scarf?
A: On delicate materials (silk, fine knits), test in an inconspicuous spot first and use a backing disc to spread the load, or opt for a magnetic converter. For handbags, pin through a reinforced area (e.g., a strap seam or canvas panel) to avoid marking soft leather. Scarves and hats usually work well if you support the area with a backing disc.

Q: What hallmarks or stamps should I expect and what does “17A” mean?
A: Most modern Chanel costume jewellery carries an oval plaque stamped CHANEL, the country of origin and a season code. For Autumn collections, the code typically reads the two‑digit year plus “A” (Automne); for example, Autumn 2017 pieces often show “17 A.” Placement and exact format can vary by season and model—please refer to our close‑up photos for this brooch.

Q: How should I care for the gold‑tone finish and rhinestones?
A: Keep the brooch dry and avoid contact with perfume, lotions, hairspray and hand sanitiser. After wear, gently wipe with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Do not soak, use ultrasonic cleaners or chemical dips—rhinestones and their settings can be sensitive to moisture and harsh cleaners. Store it separately in a pouch/box, away from humidity and direct sunlight, to preserve sparkle and plating.

Q: Is it nickel‑free and suitable for sensitive skin?
A: Fashion/costume jewellery may contain nickel. If you have sensitivities, consider wearing the brooch over thicker fabric so metal doesn’t contact the skin directly, or apply a clear barrier product to contact points. Discontinue use if irritation occurs and contact us for guidance.

Q: Can it be repaired, tightened or replated if needed?
A: A competent jeweller can usually tighten or straighten the pin, adjust/replace the catch and perform light replating on worn areas. Brooch‑to‑pendant converters are also available if you’d like to wear it as a necklace. We don’t offer in‑house modifications, but we can recommend reputable specialists. Note that alterations may affect originality and resale value.

Q: What condition should I expect, what is included, and can I return it?
A: This brooch is in Very Good Condition with light signs of careful wear possible unless noted otherwise. This listing includes no accessories unless specifically shown or stated. Returns are accepted in line with our policy—please see our Returns page for eligibility, timeframes and conditions, and ensure the item is returned in the same condition received.
