Louis VuittonEpi Papillon Trunk Bag

Q: What typically fits inside the Louis Vuitton Epi Papillon Trunk?
A: Despite its compact, semi‑rigid trunk silhouette, it comfortably carries daily essentials: a large smartphone, cardholder or compact wallet, keys, lipstick, earbuds and slim sunglasses in a soft case. Long continental wallets and A5 documents generally do not fit; a 500 ml water bottle typically won’t sit fully inside. For certainty, compare your items with the Measurements on this page or ask us for a tailored fit check for this exact piece.

Q: Can I wear it crossbody and what straps are included?
A: Yes. This piece comes with a detachable chain strap for shoulder wear and a detachable, adjustable leather strap for shoulder or high crossbody wear. The exact strap drop for this item is listed under Measurements (approx. 46 cm, adjustable). If you’d like advice on how it will sit on your frame, just ask and we’ll guide you.

Q: How secure is the closure and what does the interior look like?
A: The bag features an S‑lock closure inspired by LV’s trunkmaking heritage. Inside you’ll find a single main compartment lined in pink microfibre suede; most examples of this model do not have interior pockets. We recommend using a small zip pouch for valuables when commuting or travelling.

Q: What is Epi leather and how durable is it?
A: Epi is Louis Vuitton’s signature textured, grained calf leather known for its excellent durability and surface resilience. It’s more resistant to light scratches and offers better water resistance than many smooth leathers, making it a great choice for everyday wear. As with all leather, it isn’t fully waterproof and should be kept away from heavy rain.

Q: How should I care for the Epi leather and hardware?
A: Wipe the leather gently with a soft, dry cloth; avoid harsh cleaners and alcohol‑based products. If you choose to condition, use a high‑quality neutral leather conditioner very sparingly and test on a discreet area first. Keep away from prolonged sunlight and oils, and be mindful of colour transfer from dark denim onto light leathers. Store the bag upright, lightly stuffed, in a breathable dust bag, with straps and hardware padded to minimise impressions and micro‑scratches.

Q: Does this bag have a date code? What does “RFID” mean in the listing?
A: From around March 2021, Louis Vuitton replaced visible date codes with an embedded NFC/microchip. This piece is noted as RFID, which is consistent with that transition. The chip isn’t readable by consumer apps; it’s used by LV for internal identification. As always, A Retro Tale conducts rigorous multi‑point authentication on materials, stamps, construction and hardware for every item we sell.

Q: Where was this piece made?
A: This specific bag is labelled Made in Italy. You’ll find a “LOUIS VUITTON Paris” heat‑stamp inside along with the brand’s embedded microchip (no visible date code on newer pieces).

Q: Is the Papillon Trunk still available in boutiques?
A: The Papillon Trunk has been released in various materials (including Epi and Monogram) and availability can vary by season and region. If it’s not currently in boutiques, the pre‑loved market is the most reliable way to find specific colours and configurations like this Epi leather version.

Q: How does the Papillon Trunk differ from the classic Papillon?
A: The Trunk edition is a more structured, compact take on the cylindrical Papillon, featuring trunk‑inspired details such as the S‑lock and rivets, plus the option of both a chain strap and an adjustable leather strap. It’s designed to keep its shape beautifully while offering day‑to‑evening versatility.
